Roli Airwave - Released

This was literally my first thought after seeing the demo:

Oh, I somehow missed that new version can run on RPi, this is great news indeed!

EDIT: Ah, it seems that Gemini v5 can run on RPi (4 or 5) but it will only work with the new Ultraleap controllers, not with the (old) v1 controller :slightly_frowning_face:

One particular moment of an Andrew Huang video about this device shows stuff on screen that strongly implies that the tracking software for the Leap Motion is providing that functionality to this product. Whether that also means they are using the same core hardware inside their product I cannot say for sure, but this seems plausible.

Meanwhile I doubt that initial buzz and pre-ordered lived up to Rolis hopes. I note that more recently they have felt the need to make new blog posts that say there will be Windows support at launch. They have also felt the need to describe how they are including a calibration routine that allows the device to work with ‘every MIDI keyboard’. And they have gone on about compatibility with DAWs and other synths etc via standard CC output, and have thrown words around about being committed to an open platform.

An example of that sort of info update on their website: Airwave plays with every MIDI keyboard. | ROLI | ROLI

I really dont expect demand for this product to be compatible with the companies financial structure. But then I could say the same about all their products due to the extreme form of investment and spending they have always indulged in.

If open platform means that we can get access to the hand model then it might be interesting. Or more end user centric: A software similar to what we have for Sensel Morph or Erae, where you can draw any layout of a controller or instrument in the UI print that on paper/neoprene/touch screen/project it etc. And then play on that (touching it) and over that (in the air).
The current gestures are neat but a little limited - something these rings also already did - and those never took off.

yeah, I noticed that… a bit of a change, on launch day they were saying it was for roli products.
makes sense to broaden the appeal, to invite more sales.

I do wonder generally if it was announced so early, so they could gauge the reaction, and see where to focus efforts.

one thing though… I thought when we saw the Andrew Haung’s airwave demo (with roli seaboard) it was using the data to mpe data i.e. it was affecting particular notes.
(Id have to rewatch to remind myself exactly)
I think this was an interesting side, rather than over just sending CC ( like the Leap Motion could).
ofc, if its open, you could build something to take both data streams and do this, but I original thought the idea was the airwave would sit between your ‘keyboard’ and computer and do this kind of thing.
e.g.

Osmose/Seaboard → Airwave → Tablet/PC/Mac

anyways… still a long way out, and feels like they might still be developing the idea of what they want it to be… they have the tech, now they need to find a musical use

In air gestures weren’t attached to specific notes in the demo, and in fact Andrew mentioned that it was averaging between both hands to produce half as many (global) signals.

This came with the strong caveat that he was demonstrating prerelease software, and that there would probably be two handed gestures by the time Airwave launches.

(The visualizer tied each hand to the keys that were pressed. Perhaps that part’s leading somewhere, but it’s not a feature we’ve seen yet.)
