Even if the hardware has serious flaws, it has also some nice sides. If they could open source the software it could have perhaps an interesting second life ?
I got one quite early on and I really liked the form factor and some of the overlays, including how the overlays felt. So I wanted to rave about it. But the flaw where the pressure axis acted more like a see-saw, with increasing pressure on one finger causing decreasing pressure values on the note from another finger, caused me to give up on it completely early on. Especially when all hopes of a fix vanished from my mind when they told me on their original forum (long since deleted) that it was a hardware issue, not something they were going to fix in firmware. I considered this to be a completely unforgivable issue, one that would have caused more of a noise on the internet if this device had been more popular with people who post about MPE instruments on the internet a lot in the first place.
I would still have found some use for it on odd occasions, but in recent years when I dug mine out it seemed to be developing a faul with its usb interface and these days I dont think I can get a computer to recognise it at all.
It is too late to make that decision, so I will update the status of the Joué Play from my list of MPE hardware controllers on January 7th, 2025 to discontinued during the next monthly Zoom meeting.
