New Slim 21, nearly affordable

The one I was waiting for…

Interesting, the smaller one is less expensive per semitone than the larger ones. Unless these need to be more expensive for added sturdiness, perhaps this might mean a price drop for the larger ones also?

Nice.
I could not find anything about the DSP in the new 21. Is it the same as the bigger ones and the Osmose? Or the smaller one as in the micro?

Edit:
It has the latest 8x DSP according to Josh Madoff in the youtube comments.

21 is a strange form factor. It’s like almost two octaves.

…but this video shows a convincing use case where that’s not limiting at all:

Another compelling new demo.

interesting,
first have to say, Josh is a real asset to Haken’s marketing, feels really polished, and focused.

I’ll admit when I first saw this, I was not convinced… I love the haken engine, continuum is awesome, but $1800 21 semis ?! mostly the concern would be it does impose some limitations on what you can play (whlst recognising limitations, does not mean no uses!)

I bought a Eigenharp Pico as my first expressive controller, and quickly got frustrated with what I couldn’t do, rather than focus on what I could do (that was a ‘me problem’!)

that said, my views changed… I do think expressive instruments are so good at lead/solo lines, you could argue the ‘value proposition’ from small to large, isn’t as great as it first seems.
IF you aren’t too focus on that ONE instrument, rather see it in a larger context.

that’s the danger, and the trap I fell into with the Pico. I bought to ‘dip my toes into the water’ and a much cheaper price - but then felt limited.
today, I love the pico for its form factor, it doesn’t need to do everything, its great for solo/lead lines, pick up n’ play…its limited, but that is its charm

so, Ive no doubt, as a 2nd instrument, as Josh demonstrates this’ll be awesome.

probably also a gateway drug into the the larger models

for me, personally, Ive the EaganMatrix module (as well as Osmose), which I can combine with other controllers, so it doesn’t really add enough - despite my ever present desire for a continuum. perhaps if this had existed before the EMM, Id have gone this way?!

In another timeline I could see myself talking myself into a 21 and then being frustrated with the limitations and then saving for the 46. But I have a 46 and it’s the perfect size (though the Slim version would be nice, I can’t justify the cost of switching).

I think it looks great! So many melodies barely span more than one octave. I feel like playing one line expressively is such a big leap for people coming from piano/grid instruments that you could spend years just focusing on expressive monophonic lines. Then in the video Josh shows all the ways to extend the range beyond 21 keys.

I just read in one of the youtube comments that the semi rigid case show by Josh will be included. A good case is always useful.

As I was thinking of getting a min/micro or a module before. The 21 makes a lot more sense in my usecase, (selfcontained, connectivity)
Time will tell if I get a 21 or keep saving for a 46…
I just wish they were more common so it was easier to try one out.

Haken’s often represented at the big music expos (NAMM, Superbooth, etc). That’s often the easiest way to put your hands on one.

Are there any such tradeshows scheduled in your region?

Since I bought my first Continuum, I’ve mostly used it as it’s not supposed to be used , creating internal sequences or playing drums for example. And in those 2 situations, 21st is more than enough. Actually, it’s enough to do both.
Also, as a sound designer for live performance, it’s a creative constraint to create as much as possible with it. While on tour, if 21st is enough, I’m happy to let my 46 quietly rest in my studio

The 21 Is simply a smaller less expensive model. It has exactly the same features as Slim70 and Slim46 - only it’s smaller. It’s an 8X DSP same as the current models with the same external interfacing, same sound, same programming same presets (well there is a new Stretch String preset for the 21 but it can run on any of the other Slims as well - just needs Touch area moved to the right location for those instruments).

No. Not that I have heard.

I hope to visit superbooth some time, that and/or Schneiders Laden might be the best place to try a contiuum for me. Maybe next year?
I’ll keep looking around and try find one closer to Sweden until then.

Fun trivia: some beta releases of the firmware gave away hints of this new Slim on it’s way. Only then, it was referred to “s22”. Current HakenMidi.h changed it to “s21”, so somwhere in development it lost a note.
