Striso Duet Development

Another question about the new duet:

Are the two Striso boards permanently fixed to the frame or can they be easily removed so allow the use of one as a regular Striso?

i assume since the duet can also come as a kit that it uses the mounting screw holes on the back of striso boards. so they would be removable.
would that be correct? i already have a striso board so, could i for instance, buy the duet kit and a second striso board to create a duet?

I see that a duet body kit will be available soon:

An easy way could be an FSR on the palm rest, and if pulling is wanted too another one on the inside of the hand strap. This could be plugged into the pedal jack port. If that’s done on the two sides independently it might even give nice possibilities for pushing differently on the left or right side. A switch can be added to tie them together.

The accelerometers, or better the gyro, could work out quite well for that yes!

That would not be allowed, and would not be good for the signal, even with a physical switch. An extra USB-C port just for power would be fine I guess.

The Striso boards can be easily removed, the frame has teardrop holes so the mounting screws don’t even have to be completely removed to take it off.

FSR meaning Force sensing resistor I imagine?
I’m presuming this would be something an individual might add and so personally, I am hoping that such an addition won’t delay those instruments already pre ordered. On reflection, although a concertina player, I’m not sure it’s something that I would wish for. I actually feel I may enjoy not requiring hand straps (or pushing/pulling)… Didier demonstrates so well how nicely the instrument can be played in its present form.
… But would wish for usb B as discussed!

Quick update:
We’ve decided on having both USB B and USB C, to have a sturdy connection for external synths and a smaller more common connection for standalone use, when a powerbank or iPhone is used.

We planned to ship before my holidays, unfortunately not everything was finished in time, so they’ll be shipped early August.

Hi Piers - could you elaborate on this a bit please? Where does the USB C connection come into the picture? I have two Striso boards and am keen to order a body to mount them on. I know you can set up the expression pedal jack as an audio in to mix the sound from two boards… is there a USB hub built into the body for power and to consolidate MIDI information, or something? You mention hooking the duet up to external synths…

I’ll be ordering one anyway, and I want to get a minirig for it, but it would be useful to have a description of exactly how it all fits together (or a photo of the body and cabling without the boards mounted) so I can work out if I need to order anything else. Thanks!

Here are some pictures, the updated website with more details is still in progress.

A Minirig or other small speaker or powerbank can be attached inside with a velcro strap:

On top there are two hubs, one for USB and one for audio:

The USB hub has a USB-B and a USB-C port for data, with an automatic switch that uses the USB-B connection when that is connected, and otherwise switches the to the USB-C connection. Additionally there is a USB-C connection for additional power, so that if a mobile device is used for the synthesizer the power for the Striso boards can come from a powerbank.

The audio hub is for allowing a 6.35mm jack to be used to connect to an amplifier or mixer, and a 3.5mm mini-jack to the speaker or headphones. There are switches to allow for different setups. The 6.35mm jack can be switched between mono and stereo. The other switch gives the choice between putting the left and right Striso board on different channels, or mixing them together.

The duet comes with:

  • Two USB cables and two audio cables to the hubs.
  • One extra audio cable for connecting a Minirig or other internal speaker.
  • Velcro strap for attaching speaker or powerbank.
  • Neck strap for carrying the Striso duet around your neck.

So for using the duet with a Minirig the only extra thing you need is a short USB-C to USB-C cable for using the Minirig as powerbank.

As requested in this thread there are now some holes in the front panel for the sound to come out. Alternatively the front panel can be left off.
