Anyma V (plugin version of the Anyma Phi/Omega engine)

Aodyo have created a software version of the synth engine of their Anyma Phi/Omega synthesizers: Anyma V
It seems to be a semi-modular hybrid “physical modelling” MPE capable synth that is patch compatible with the hardware versions and works with Windows/Mac/Linux as vst/AU and standalone app.

Review of the (monophonic version of the) hardware:

Their playing surface Loom that was on Kickstarter recently seems to be delayed - sniff. Thus they give out free Anyma V licenses to pledgers - a nice move! The synth looks promising on first sight - will have to play around with this!

Edit: Neat, the Linux version also comes as armv7hf and armv8 versions (aside x86), so this might run on (a newer) Raspberry Pi!

Havent found a platform/DAW that the current demo version actually runs on successfully at all yet. Will keep trying all sorts of combinations.

If anybody finds a setup that works with current version, please report the details here, cheers.

I also can’t get the demo version to work. Tried standalone and as an AU/VST on both Mac and pc. It’s really intriguing as I’ve wanted an Anyma phi for ages but I can’t spend money on it if the demo is broken.

yup, standalone no sound… VST/AU crashed every host I tried it in…
(bitwig, logic, Ableton, vcv rack… even juce test host.)

Mac M1/ latest MacOS

seems a few got it running on windows (elektronauts)… so guess it was only tested there?
pretty embarrassing really… did they really not test this at all on a Mac before releasing?

Tried the standalone version on Windows 11 yesterday - worked. Seems I was lucky

M2 Mac here—the audio output of the standalone app came up misconfigured, I changed the output routing and when I came back to the internal speakers it worked from the on-screen keyboard. I didn’t have a chance to explore beyond that.

yeah, it seems Demo does not work at all…

As soon as licensed = all works OK (AU, VST3 and standalone) but one has to close and reopen after licensed.
Twists and turns; I’m the last backer of a 2oct. Loom  but, with more waiting to do. :slightly_frowning_face:

Did some further testing:

  • Windows 11 (onboard sound atm.) - registered Anyma V version:

    • standalone: works
    • VST in Bitwig: works
    • VST in Gigperformer: works
  • macOS (Intel chip, Big Sur, onboard sound atm.) - Anyma V demo version:

    • standalone: starts but no sound
    • GigPerformer: starts but no sound (the odd thing is - when I switch to Anyma and then to another plugin like Pianoteq then this has no sound anymore either. I first have to switch to another audio interface and then back to get sound from Pianoteq again. When I switch to Anyma again, it’s the same as before. So the Anyma VST seems to mess up audio in GigPerformer)
    • Bigwig: crashes

I am puzzled about the experience with macOS - usually machines are much more “standard” there than in the Windows world. Really seems as if they didn’t do any testing on Mac at all

Edit: retested now with a registered version of Anyma V on macOS, too, thanks to the hint from @keymanpal. They should put some work into the demo it seems…

  • macOS (Intel chip, Big Sur, onboard sound atm.) - registered Anyma V version:
    • standalone, GigPerformer and Bitwig all work now. (I had to load the registration file into the standalone version and the VST separately for some reason…)

Ah, good find! I have registered it on Windows and only tried the demo on Mac. Retesting…

Yeah super weird thing… I can’t recall something like this - audio cuts just by dropping this plugin (VST3 that is as AU complete crash every host).

It’s even more embarrassing than you think: I’m developing all this on a Mac, and the Mac is, by far, our most tested platform!
It’s just that this bug didn’t hit any of our test machines, and it seems to hit people at random across platforms.
Let’s call it our little CrowdStrike event :scream:.

I appreciate the detective skills I see here, the issue was indeed caused by the activation system.
A fix is on the way.

I’m happy if added to the beta testing team

The downloads for Anyma V have been updated to fix the issue with demo mode (now version 1.2.1 instead of 1.2.0), though I havent quite had a chance to try it yet.

Please wait until the announcement, there remains an activation bug with some Windows machines.

Anyma V v1.2.1 is out and fixes the crashing, sound and activation bugs many reported from the initial version:

Just installed it and it works a treat. (Mac OS) I had to chose MPE mode to get a sound out of it. There is no apparent latency with Bluetooth. I have only been playing with it for 10 minutes but no real issues so far.
I can only load it on the penultimate version of my DAW (Bitwig) but I expect that to change - The latest update was only yesterday.

So they released it ? Did not get any email. Where can I find it ?

It’s the same link as before, just download it again from your order email or from the product page. Some minor bugfixes are on the way. We’ll send a mail some time next week to Omega and Loom contributors.

Ok thank you. Will do

demo works for me nicely on macOS, both standalone and vst (in various daws) :+1:

initial impressions…
some of the patches reveal a nice sounding synth engine… with a lot of variety.
looks pretty powerful, and I found the UI relatively easy to follow.
I like that most things are on one page (though more on this in a second!) , so you get a reasonable overview of the patch .

however, I will say, I do not find the UI ‘inviting’ to use… actually, quite off putting.
for sure, with this level of complexity, its never easy to pull off.

Im not quite sure what it is … Im used to things like UVI Falcon/Reaktor, so its not the complexity that overwhelm ( *)

initial impression was things were way to small, so thats part of it.
but I suspect, on a deeper level, its probably the uniformity of the UI.
I think something is needed to ‘break it up’ a bit…perhaps using different colours for general.oscillators, effects, modulators.

also perhaps a way to ‘hide’ certain elements you are not currently working on.
e.g. hide the modulators, presets… even the setting toolbar, or the signal flow.

Its a shame… as I think the features/functionality/sound of the synth engine are very interesting, but the UI really puts me off…

disappointing, because if Id have loved the software, I could see how this might have driven me to wanting the hardware… but its kind of done the opposite, its put me off the hardware.

ironically, I can see it’s a great for those that have backed the hardware, its free, and provides a great way to create presets for your synth.

anyway, I wish Aoydo the best on this… and, for sure, from playing with this software, I think the hardware will sound great.

( * ) alternative take… its just me
perhaps, its because I have the eagan matrix, eurorack and complex software like falcon/vcv in my life… perhaps, I just felt I didn’t need something with this level of complexity.
perhaps I now look for synths that are more focused, less flexible… more character.
(Im still amazed how often I turn to Madrona Labs Aalto or my TI, just because they are so simple to use)

but for sure, if you don’t have many synths, the vast coverage this synth engine has would be amazing !
