a response to Expressive E Osmose… (and to some extent Arturia Polybrute) ?
would seem to be logical move, given the Roli Seaboard was initially marketed as an expressive piano (like) experience… and now perhaps have lost this a bit…
then again… Roli’s marketing is pretty purple sky at times
Hmm. «We changed the piano. What’s next changes everything.» and «If you can imagine it, you can play it» makes me think it is some kind of accessible «make music without having to learn anything or put real effort into it» kind of product. I hope I am wrong.
They also got rid of the Lumi brand, and renamed the existing Lumi devices the Piano M.
It is hard to be sure exactly whats coming due to the really excessive hyperbole that they’ve used so far, and nothing else on display. I think its pretty much a certainty that they are going to go heavy on the ‘new way of learning or not needing to learn at all’ side of things, but its unclear what form that will take or what else is in the product.
The same sort of clues, and more of the excessive hyperbole that is so typical of Roland Lamb, is on display in their message from the CEO blog post:
A year ago, we had a major company-transforming product breakthrough which created a small problem to solve. As you may know, we have had two websites, ROLI.com and playLUMI.com. We were selling a music learning experience on playLUMI.com and music creation products on ROLI.com.
Today, we’re bringing everything together under one brand, and on one website, and with some very exciting new products to come. Let me explain.
When we had this product breakthrough - although I can’t tell you what it is (yet!) - it became clear to us that we had invented a fundamentally revolutionary musical technology, which will change everything about how human beings interact with music. And more importantly, it will radically change how many people can access music engagement. I don’t have a crystal ball - it may or may not be our version of this innovation that succeeds. But mark my words, some version of this technology will define how everyone in the future engages with music.
Because this technology is a fundamental platform enhancement for music engagement, it equally impacts learners and creators, and we realized that Music that is free ultimately does not discriminate between learning and creation. Creation is learning. Learning is creation.
“aesthetically pleasing”, “very sleek design”, “good looking”, “getting a feel for the music”, “it needs to be talked to and it talks back”, “thinking outside the box”, “a big game changer”

Chances are that it’ll have some form of educational focus, as said @Kai . Also noticing the #pianocentrism, as @greaterthanzero .
So, adding things together… A device (and associated software) for Air Piano competitions?
(A colleague has done research on Air Guitar embodiment…)
Some people expect Ableton to announce something based on hand gestures in the air (though the common thread is around faders, because “move”). ROLI might be the one focusing on “the theremin effect”.
Of course, there’s been a long series of apps and devices meant to capture hand gestures for use in music. It’s one of the specialties @gbevin whose MIDIwrist, GECO, and MIDI Widgets could all serve as prior art. We also remember ACSabre. MusiKraken keeps receiving updates. Specialized rings and watches keep coming out.
Not saying it’s a saturated market. Just wonder what could be distinctive in a ROLI version, if it’s related in any way.
it feels a bit odd for Ableton to want to team up with Roli esp. given Roli’s recent past (financials and also reputation) - what do Ableton gain out of such a partnership?
(lets remember Ableton broke off from Akai for the Push 2)
Some are speculating Ableton are planning a Mini Push…
Push → Move , seems adjacent enough, with mobile connotations.
I could see this, Ive often thought the Push is a bit too big even on a studio desk. a small push for laptop / mobile users could be interesting. I might even ditch my Push 2 for it.
Roli , who knows, they seem to be using every adjective their marketing team thinks of.
I personally wonder how/who its going to fund whatever it is… I cannot see crowdfunding going well after the fiasco of lumi.
that said, its good to have a innovative company, so wish them well.
anyway, never say never… for sure, announcements on the same date is an unusual coincidence.
I’m sticking with my fader prediction on Ableton Move, simply because that’s the obvious gap in their ecosystem (and the controller marketplace) left by Akai’s transition to the APC64.
The other ideas are all sweet, but they don’t make that much sense in the overall context of this moment.
(I think people are thinking too much about innovation, not enough about simple utility.)
I think its just congested timing when trying to get stuff launched in time for the holiday season. For sure there are plenty of companies that ideally try to avoid announcing things on exactly the same day, but its not essential, and we’ve seen it before when NAMM season comes around.
